We are through some of the depressing cold days of October and November - and now Christmas is in sight. And, after that, we've got the summer within reach already! To help Christmas come quicker, try a German market, or Christmas market, of which there are many in both the UK and abroad.
Christmas markets bring the Christmas spirit to a whole community. Typically, a Christmas market will consist of a variety of Christmas-themed stalls, selling arts and crafts, food, and drink. Also you will often see several tents in which to sit down and relax, with a good litre 'stein' of Germany's finest beer. You will find the atmosphere in these beer tents is usually electric as German oompa bands play classic tunes like Hey Jude and the whole crowd sings along. German markets are certainly places where a whole community can come together, lose their inhibitions, celebrate Christmas and have fun.
The food at German markets is usually excellent. The typical German cuisine is on offer such as Wurst (German sausage), pork burgers, pork in a bun and fried potatos. Now, we at The Travel Directory love abit of sausage so we usually get the Bratwurst or Currywurst which always does the trick nicely.
You can find cheap flights to many Christmas markets outside the UK. Germany has several excellent market destinations, which you will obviously find to be the most authentic around. For example, try flights to Berlin, Dusseldorf, Cologne or Munich. Outside of Germany, cities hosting great Christmas markets include Alsace, Brussels, Zurich, and Chicago. In the UK, large markets can be located in Edinburgh, Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester to name but a few. We were at the Leeds market last weekend and had a great time - such a friendly crowd of people and a good session on the German Weissbeers.
So - look at spending a weekend in another city this winter and visit a German Christmas market - you should have a great time whatever your age.
