The UK has seen the coldest December so far since records began. The average minimum temperature for December so far is approximately -10°C so far in December (this was published on 21/12/2010) - this smashes the previous record of average UK minimum temperatures in December of -3.7°C. Of course there are several days left in December but forecasts are predicting perhaps some of the coldest nights EVER in the UK over the next few days - we are in for a cold Christmas.

If you are reading this in 2011 or later, or are from outside the UK, you could be looking back at a historical time for the UK....Without trying to over dramatise everything of course! Us Brits are terrible moaners when it comes to snow. Even a small dusting will cause the country to grind to a halt. Other European countries such as Germany, Austria, Sweden and Denmark cope so much better, but...I doubt we will ever adapt, its just part of the way we live, panic-ridden when the snow begins to fall.

So what does this winter mean for the travel industry? Well short term, its bad for travellers as many flights have been cancelled due to snow. Long term, will colder winters encourage tourism in the winter months? Perhaps, although potentially discourage it as well if people are worried their holidays will be cancelled and money will be lost.
